CHAPTER EIGHT

Between the Sheets

She stood with one foot covering the other as he gently set the tray of food down.

“You’re okay with this? Ya sure this is what you want?”

“Yes. I’m sure.”

He cocked his head to the side, regarded her for a moment or two, then removed his robe and underwear. ‘Waiting,’ by Jule Vera was now playing, one of her favorite songs.

And then, he was suddenly before her, enveloping her in his strong arms. The way he took hold of her with both tenderness and command made her heart scream. He rocked her in a slow dance, all while sustaining a strong embrace. He felt like a fortress against her body. Too tall to climb over and get around, but she didn’t dare wish to. He felt like a stone lion that had come to life, and he was ferocious to others, but good to her, keeping all the bad shit out, sending it away, far away. Nothing else mattered but this moment. Right here. Right now.

“When I tell you that you’re the most beautiful person in my world, you better believe me.” He rested his chin on top of her head as they slow danced, their naked bodies swaying back and forth like palm tree leaves in a cool breeze. The smell of the food blended in with the scent of his cologne, and she felt good all over. “From the moment I first saw you, Egypt, to right now, this was all meant to be.” She couldn’t deny that. “Long walks in the snow… I remember those big, fluffy snowflakes landing on your nose. One time, you let me see you cry and I wiped your tears away. Your parents were havin’ trouble with the insurance company regarding the house fire. You couldn’t go home, but you didn’t want to, because you’d met me.”

“How are you remembering all these things?”

“I don’t know. It all came back to me though. Everything. I remember it all now.” They kept on dancing, and though he was significantly taller, it felt as if they were made to be together. They fit perfectly. Every curve, dip, and groove. “I also remember when ya noticed something was wrong with me one day. I didn’t wanna talk about it, so I snapped at ya. Afterwards, I apologized. You held me close when I told ya my mother had found a lump in her breast. Her own mother had died of breast cancer, and one of ’er cousins, too. I was convinced she was gonna die. Thankfully, she was okay, they caught it on time, but before she was out of the woods, you told me you were gonna pray for her, and I believed ya. I felt like there was power in your words because it seemed whatever you put your mind to would happen. So maybe, just maybe, God would listen to your request. He did. We were there for each other… I could talk to you. You could talk to me. I never felt judged by you, even when I did stupid stuff.
